Have you ever wondered about becoming a beekeeper, only to find out how difficult, expensive and time-consuming it could be? I too did some investigating years ago, and decided the standard commercial American vertical beehives (Langstroth hive) would simply be a system too heavy, expensive and involved to attempt. Recently I have been overjoyed to find a system of beehives (Layens horizontal hive) which need relatively little attention, and are much easier to manage (about 8 pounds per frame full of honey compared to lifting 60-80 pounds of a deep hive box of frames from the traditional Langstroth hive). My first year in building Layens hives produced 2 gallons of organic raw honey with very little effort. We now have 5 Layens hives in my bee yards which the next year produced enough for my own needs, and 5 gallons to sell.
